Bethel Farms wishes Northside Nursery a Happy 35th Anniversary! This family owned and operated landscape design and maintenance business in Ft. Pierce, Florida was established in 1975 as a small retail garden center. And as we know in the world of agriculture, from small beginnings, great things grow!

Owner Jon Goff came to work for his grandfather Wilmer's nursery as a teenager, and when he married Teresa, she joined in the family business managing the garden center. They partnered with Eric and Kim Jackson in 1996, with the Jacksons bringing their landscape company into the mix. Jon, Teresa and Eric are all Ft. Pierce natives and Kim is a "near-native", arriving in Florida in 1972.

After the "summer of the hurricanes" in 2004, Northside closed the garden center retail business and converted the space into a small engine repair center where they service Snapper, Stihl and Exmark equipment. They are certified pest control contractors and are licensed to handle irrigation system installation and service. Northside's 400+ lawn maintenance clients can be found all along the east coast of Florida, from Roseland south to Hope Sound, serviced by 80 customer service-oriented Northside Nursery representatives.

Business is "going great" according to Kim, who handles the company's marketing. "We specialize in customer service and in doing everything top-quality." Which is why they choose to install Bethel Farms sod.

Jon, Teresa, Eric and Kim have a combined legacy of over 80 years in the business and are dedicated to continuing to supply their customers with the best possible products and service. After all, as Kim says, "This is our life!"

"I love this grass. When we started looking for an alternative to St. Augustine grass, the first thing that attracted me to EMPIRE was aesthetics. We are trying to create the aura of backyard Americana and I fell in love with the appearance of EMPIRE before we even began to evaluate its performance."

Reunion Resort Selects Bethel Farms' EMPIRE as Preferred Landscape Turfgrass

Bethel Farms' EMPIRE Zoysia has been chosen as the exclusive landscape turf grass at Reunion Resort & Club, a 2300-acre development just south of Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL.

"This is a great grass," said Mark Cole, Director of Golf Course Maintenance for Ginn Golf, a division of the company that is developing Reunion and several other upscale communities in Florida and South Carolina. "It's shade tolerant, heat resistant, and drought resistant. We can take it down to 7/16-inch and put it on tee tops in shady areas or we can bring it up to an inch and a half and cut it with a regular rotary mower."

Cole spoke recently to a group of Australian sod producers along with county extension agents and landscape journalists. The Australians were touring the Southeastern U.S. in search of solutions to the island nation's severe five-year drought. As it turns out, Cole wasn't the only one in the group impressed by the performance of Bethel Farm's Empire.

"I love this grass," said Kevin Clingerman, Landscape Manager for Ginn. "When we started looking for an alternative to St. Augustine grass, the first thing that attracted me to EMPIRE was aesthetics. We are trying to create the aura of backyard Americana and I fell in love with the appearance of EMPIRE before we even began to evaluate its performance."

Durability and drought-resistance were the first two performance factors that caught Clingerman's attention.

"Reunion is a resort on steroids and a community in progress," he said. "We are perpetually under construction but everything has to look beautiful. We have to be green even if it means putting the grass down before the irrigation system is in."

Cole chimed in: "We put some of it on the ground without irrigation and it got no water for a month and then after half an inch of rain it greened up in two days."

(Note: Although Bethel Farms is pleased to hear this grass performed so well without watering, this is not a recommended practice!)

Perhaps EMPIRE's most remarkable characteristic is its shade tolerance in comparison to other generic Zoysia grasses. Cole and Clingerman took the group to a site shaded by about a dozen mature oak trees and showed a stand of EMPIRE overseeded with winter rye and holding its own.

"That spot never gets any direct sunlight," Cole said, "and it's so shade tolerant that you don't have to change your irrigation practices and it will come out (of overseed) better than Bermuda (grass)."

Neither Clingerman nor Cole has noted any disease problems and one treatment took care of an attack by billbugs. "You can spray anything on it that you'd put on Bermuda grass," Cole said.

"This is a great grass for Florida," he added. "Water drives development in Florida. Because of consumption limitations, we've had to reduce or even eliminate irrigation to established areas to accommodate a grow-in situation on a golf course or major landscape feature. We can trust this grass to come back when we turn the water back on. We've done it numerous times."

Bethel Farms is a certified grower of EMPIRE Zoysia, which was introduced to the United States by Sod Solutions -- a leading developer of improved warm season turf grasses. Bethel Farms is also a certified grower of other patented Sod Solutions grasses including Palmetto St. Augustine, EMPIRE Zoysia, Celebration Bermuda grass, and Sapphire St. Augustine.
